Seldom Seen is a remote,  iconic, and  aptly named place in the heart of East Gippsland.

Seldom Seen is now  also the theme of an East Gippsland Arts Trail being created specially for Melbourne Cup weekend.

A trail designed to make our artspaces and gorgeous places … less seldom seen.

So…that’s Buchan Gallery, East Gippsland Art Gallery, Nuart Metung, East Gippsland Aboriginal Arts Corporation, Orbost Exhibition Centre and the Wilderness Coast Artists – all creating exhibitions, installations and artworks  that respond to the idea of ‘seldom seen’.

The Seldom Seen Arts Trail is also our chance to show-off some of our best kept secrets. Encouraging visitors to see the places that artists and adventurers love to visit – best walks, best look-outs, favourite cafes, best old barns, East Gippsland experiences to take you off the beaten track – by car, by foot, by bike or by paddle.

Each gallery (artspace) on the Trail  took part in a speed-dating process to be matched with a local artistic mentor, to add extra inspiration to the art-making process. Our mentors are all highly acclaimed local artists: Josephine Jakobi, Daniel Jenkins, Catherine Larkins, Dore Stockhausen & Marcus Foley,  Jenny Toye, Gary Yelen.

Each artspace now has its own fabulous team of artists working with its ‘speed date mentor’  to create their seldom seen art for the Cup weekend – multimedia, stencil, textile, photography, print-making, painting, kinetic and traditional sculpture in the environment. And yes … more.

The Trail will be on show all through the long weekend, but  each artspace will have its own moment to shine –a local celebration, with a little food, wine and music to share – scheduled  across the 4 days. We hope all everyone will try to ‘do’ some, if not all of the Seldom Seen Arts Trail. (mud maps available soon).

The Trail extends also to  Nungurner [with a new collection - Rare Gems - by oneofftwo contemporary jewellery studio].  And to Nowa Nowa [for it’s Hole Truth project – an artist-built minigolf course that features 6 local artists, plus Cameron Robbins’ Devil’s Hole (in One) and a youth-produced multimedia installation – Ice Bait & Tackle.
