30 October – 3 November 2009. Melbourne Cup Weekend
Seldom Seen is a remote, iconic, and aptly named place in the heart of East Gippsland.
Seldom Seen is now also the theme of an East Gippsland Arts Trail being created specially for Melbourne Cup weekend.
A trail designed to make our artspaces and gorgeous places … less seldom seen.

the seldom seen weekend
The Seldom Seen project has brought together East Gippsland’s most creative talents, funkiest artists and some of our ‘rare’ gippsland experiences [ gorgeous places, local stories, special sheds, and friendly, friendly people] – all on one trail, for one weekend. And it’s all about … seldom seen.
Right now, we are in the process of creating a fairly divine alternative to the Melbourne Cup rat-race. OK. the Cup’s fun for some. Well, lots actually. But for the rest of us – the ones who love discovering fresh art; undiscovered artists; real people; gorgeous wild places; the Seldom Seen Arts Trail could be a better bet.
The Seldom Seen project began with a ‘speed-dating’ session to match six artist-mentors with six artspaces. Then we added plenty of local practising artists, a great ‘concept’ and a tight deadline. The result is a fabulous, slightly competitive, but fun, trail of artworks. Some of this art is serious. some frivolous. some ephemeral. some challenging. some have been major, major undertakings.
All venues are open for the 4-day weekend, but each one also has its moment ‘in the sun’. Most are free. The line-up now looks like this:

We know that some visitors will only see some parts of the Trail – but we really encourage you to take it all in if you can.
The complete trail – from Buchan on the Friday night and looping back to Lakes Entrance on the Monday is a reasonable distance [ around 250 km all up]. But you can spread it over the 4 days. Do it in chunks. Drive some. Walk some. And don’t forget to check out the cycling and canoe options.
And for the really adventurous – make THE real Seldom Seen your ultimate destination. Snowy River Cycling offers a fully supported ride from Seldom Seen to McKillops Bridge – plus a range of other rides that will help you discover our seldom seen artworks in our far too seldom seen places.
